Women in Algeria Are still Struggling to Achieve SDG 5
Women in Algeria are still struggling to fully enjoy their basic right to life. According to statistics, calls to police and hotlines by domestic violence victims increased during the Covid-19 pandemic. Since early 2020, more than 50 women in Algeria have been subjected to femicide.
Despite all the advances in legislations, the position of women has been shrinking for more than two decades – and has become almost non-existent – fueled by poverty, femicide, domestic and sexual violence, social inequality, among others.
In this context, the NGO major group of Africa expresses its concern about the regression in achieving SDG 5 indicators in Algeria, and recommends the government to pay more attention to the situation of women in Algeria, and launch programs to support gender equality.
