 “Conflict disputes and its effect on poverty in conflict affected area 

 A closer look on Africa region and the role of UN Major group

Introduction:

Within the framework of its interest in advancing the wheel of sustainable development and on the sidelines of the 202 Partnership Forum of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and in the partnership with the UN Major group for Africa. Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights is organizing E-Symposium entitled “Conflict disputes and its effect on poverty in conflict affected area: A closer look on Africa region and the role of UN Major group”. which comes in consistent with the 2024 theme, “Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions”.

The E-Symposium will focus on illuminating the strong relationship between Goals 1 on ending poverty and Goal 16 on peace, and how they affect each other. The event will examine how all of this will negatively affect the progress of SDGs in this area on the long term.

  Why Africa?

Africa is considered as one of the largest hotspots in the world as a result of the disputes, conflicts and political unrest that have controlled many of its countries for years, which has cast shadow over African societies that have experienced the aggravation of the poverty crisis as a result of the major weakness elements that conflicts create in the economies of conflict affected African societies. However, the duality of poverty and crises is directly linked to weakening the ability of conflict-affected communities in Africa to form the partnerships that was supposed to support ways and steps of improvement, which impedes sustainable development paths in conflict-affected area in light of the complete absence of international and regional partnerships that could support countries’ efforts to achieve Stabilize and reduce the negative effects of poverty on the people of conflict affected communities.

  1. 1. Introduction to the United Nations Partnerships Forum and its role in achieving sustainable development.
  2. Shed light on UN Major groups and its role in achieving SDGs in Africa.
  3. Study the correlation between 2030 Agenda goals: especially Goal 1 on ending poverty, goal 5 and Goal 16 , and how both are related to other goals.
  4. Examining the African region disputes and how it affect poverty spread.
  5. Discussing the Importance of partnerships in combating poverty and supporting SDGs paths in conflict affected countries.
  6. Role of CSOs as a linking point to strengthen international and regional partnerships and accelerating the development in the conflict affected communities.
